Welcome to Mr. Fink’s Private Collection of Assorted Mythical Creatures!

Trespassers, salesmen, journalists, and hippies are prohibited.

            “Happy anniversary, Sara!”

Rayon and Sara walked, hand in hand, through the front gates of Mr. Fink’s Private Collection of Assorted Mythical Creatures. The brass gates towered on either side of them, swung open freely. Before them stretched the thoroughfare, lined with cages containing exotic beasts from across the globe. Roars, grunts, and squawks filled the air in a rainbow of sound.

The Hunter couple were dressed formally. Sara wore a blue evening gown. Her hair was in an up-do, but regardless, some blonde locks still escaped. There was a string of pearls around her neck, and a shawl over her shoulders. She wore a pair of white gloves, which went all the way up to her elbows. A small purse dangled from her hands.

Rayon wore a tuxedo, complete with a bow tie. His hair was neatly combed, but with each step, another tuft rose. His metal hand was hidden by a single leather glove, and his dress shoes polished to perfection. Still, despite his finery, his lion tail flicked about behind him. He insisted it made him feel unique.

Just inside the gate was a small crowd of people, all wearing fine clothing and holding themselves arrogantly. As the Hunters joined the back of the group, they conversed quietly.

“A private collection,” Sara observed, “How eloquent. Overpriced, but eloquent.”

“After this,” Rayon said, “I have reservations for a fancy restaurant just off the shore of the Orinabalian coast. We can eat expensive food as we watch the sun sink below the ocean.”

Sara considered this, and then smiled. She kissed his cheek, “Thank you, love. What a wonderful anniversary present this is.” Rayon flushed a deep red.

“Best of all, we’re not paying for any of it,” Rayon grinned, “Turns out, Mr. Fink accepts Kingdomish currency, so all I had to do was go to the capital and call in a favor-“

“And you got the High Queen to pay for everything.”

He shook his head with a chuckle, “It’s ridiculously easy to guilt-trip her.”

“Greetings, my lovely ladies and dashing gentlemen!”

Up to the group strutted a man. He was a shrimp of a man, with a lean, underwhelming look about him. He was barely five feet tall. His black hair was obviously a comb-over, and every few seconds, he would reach up to adjust it. He wore a grey suit, with a bright pink rose jutting from the breast pocket.

A massive bodyguard accompanied the newcomer, walking a pace behind him. He was a mountain of a man, and towered above everyone at almost seven feet. He wore a plain black suit, with a black tie. His thick brow covered his beady eyes. He clasped his apelike hands and said nothing.

“I am Mr. Fink, proprietor of this establishment!” exclaimed the short man, “I graciously welcome all of you! This is my bodyguard, Clout.” Clout grunted.

As Mr. Fink continued his introduction, Sara cast a look to her husband. Judging from the expression on his face, Rayon was torn between wild amusement and fear at the sight of Clout. Sara shook her head.

Mr. Fink finally finished his introduction, and ushered the rich folk off into the gallery. As the crowd began to move, Rayon and Sara followed, in the back. Mr. Fink idled up to them, joining them at the rear of the group. Clout lingered a few paces behind.

“Hello, friends!” Mr. Fink said, “I don’t believe I caught your names.”

“Rayon Hunter,” Rayon replied, extending his hand. The two shook. “This is my wife, Sara.”

“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” Mr. Fink said. He paused visibly, and then commented shyly, “Mr. Hunter, I can’t help but notice… you seem to be gifted with a lovely tail. Are you a half-animal human?”

            “Yes, actually,” Rayon replied, “Half-lion.”

            “Mountain or African?”

            “African.”

“Weeeellll!” Mr. Fink brightened considerably, “How refreshingly unusual! I supposed all the half-lion humanoids were secluded on the remote Shipwrecked Island. Even so, their population is largely female. To become acquainted with a male half-lion in such marvelous shape as yourself… well, it’s an honor, sir.”

            “Thank you.”

“However! Let’s not waste any more time in the formalities,” Mr. Fink smiled broadly, “On with the tour!”

Off walked the couple, joining the group. As they strayed, Mr. Fink shuffled up to Clout and whispered to him. Clout grunted and disappeared behind a nearby building.

The tour was pleasant. Mr. Fink showed them a herd of unicorns and pegasus he owned, followed a satyr, and an aquarium with a number of beautiful fish. Mr. Fink prided himself on one fish in particular, which could sing with a gorgeous soprano voice.

As the group exited the aquarium, they entered a dark building, carefully shielded from the light of the outside world. The guests walked on a winding path through the exhibits, which flanked them on either side. As they walked, Mr. Fink continued to speak.

“This building houses my nocturnal creatures,” Mr. Fink explained, and began to go down the list. No one really listened.

Rayon was at the very back of the group, since the walkway was only wide enough for them to go single-file. Sara was a step ahead of him. She paused to observe an albino fruit bat, which peered at her curiously.

“It’s almost adorable,” Sara commented, “In a translucent, demonic way.”

Rayon was lingering a little, observing a dog-sized cockroach with fascinated disgust. He looked towards Sara, “What?”

            “This fruit bat.”

Rayon began to move towards her, but his progress was halted. A hand clapped over his mouth, and he felt a prick in his right shoulder. His eyes widened, and he began to struggle, but was sorely outmuscled.

Sara’s back was to Rayon. She failed to notice anything happening behind her, as it occurred under the cover of silence and darkness. After a few moments, however, she inevitably turned to look at her husband.

“Rayo-“ Sara began. She stopped abruptly, alarmed.

            Rayon was gone.

            Later…

Consciousness was restored gradually to Rayon, as he recovered from the mysterious anesthetic he’d been injected with. As his vision returned, he realized with some alarm that he was in a cage. The surrounding walls were all bars, too close together for one to slip between. The floor beneath him was an unforgiving concrete. A shadow fell across one corner of the cage.

Realization shook him, and adrenalin rushed through his limbs. He bounded up, landing in a crouch. His tail fluffed like a bottlebrush, he looked around him wildly. His left arm, he clicked into place defensively. The right was prepared to strike.

“Calm down, lion man. No one’s going to hurt you. Yet.”

Rayon spun. His gaze fell upon the shadowy corner. He squinted, and could make out the form of a person. Rayon remained defensive.

“Who’s there?” he called out, “Show yourself.”

Out of the shadow stepped a woman. She had a head straight brown hair, which fell around her shoulders. She wore a loose, baggy tunic, and a pair of tight pants. Bracelets encircled either wrist. Finally, a lion tail extended from her backside, flipping around behind her. Jewelry dangled from the end of the tail, shimmering in the light. In her arms was a small bundle, which she clung to tightly.

            Rayon backed up rapidly, “Lyoness!”

“It’s been a while,” Lyoness said, “Hasn’t it?” she turned from him with a frown. “It feels like, just yesterday, Michael and I were competing for the title of ‘nastiest villain’.”

            “That was months ago.”

            “I know.”

Rayon sensed she wasn’t set on attacking him, so he lowered his fists and relaxed his stance. Regardless, he still kept a wide margin of room between himself and the lion-woman. He rubbed the back of his neck with confusion.

“How did I get here?” Rayon asked, looking around. The cage was within a large warehouse, vast and dimly-lit. Many cages like it were spread around, including a number of crates. Rayon could hear faint rumbles and growls within them, beyond his vision. Far off on the opposite side of the room was the exit, but it was bolted firmly.

“Mr. Fink is a collector,” Lyoness said, “Isn’t it obvious? He loves exotic species.”

            “Yeah, but-“ Rayon stopped, “Ohhhhhhhhhhh.”

“Congrats,” Lyoness scoffed, “You’re now an honorary member of the collection.”

“And one of my enemies is my cellmate.”

Lyoness turned again, delivering him a piercing stare of disapproval. Rayon planted his hands on his hips defensively.

“You seem so passive about all this,” Rayon accused, “How long have you been here? And how did you get here in the first place? And why aren’t you scheming to escape, or trying to make me do what you want? What could’ve possibly happened in the last several months that’s changed you this much?”

Soft crying echoed from Lyoness’ arms. The bundle she’d been cradling suddenly shook to life. She peeled back a layer of cloth. Rayon leaned in to see better, astonished. Lyoness continued glowering at him.

There, in Lyoness’ arms, was a tiny baby. The baby had dimpled cheeks, and petite fists that closed around locks of Lyoness’ hair. A tuft of brown hair adorned his head. His obsidian eyes opened to observe the world. Lyoness lifted the baby to her shoulder, holding him tightly. As she held him up, a small panther tail fell from the folds of the blanket.

"I made a mistake," she whispered.

Rayon gaped, beyond stunned. He remained rooted to the spot, his shock overcoming his limbs and common sense. He stood there for a long, long moment, just staring at Lyoness and her baby. Lyoness turned her back to him as she soothed the crying child.

“What.” Rayon managed. It came out as a half-throated, feeble squeak.

“I should never have shown him to Michael,” Lyoness said quietly, rocking her baby back and forth. “He visited me a week ago, in the night. That was when I introduced him to this child.”

Rayon’s shoulders sank. “I can imagine his reaction."

“He struck me, and delivered me unconscious,” bitterness crept into Lyoness’ voice. “When I woke up, my baby and I were in this miserable place, and Michael was nowhere in sight.”

            “Good.”

            “Good?!” she demanded.

            “He could’ve killed you both.”

Lyoness’ eyes shut tightly, tears beginning to trickle down her cheeks, “I know.”

Silence fell. Rayon drifted up to the bars of the cage, gazing out. He stared at nothing in particular as he contemplated what was happening around him. Lyoness cried softly in the opposite corner, holding onto her baby for dear life. For a few moments, neither of them spoke.

“What’d you name him?” Rayon asked finally.

“I named him before I introduced him to his father,” Lyoness explained, wiping her eyes.

            “Yeah?”

Lyoness bent, kissing the baby’s forehead as he fell back into a quiet slumber. “His name is Michael.”

            A Few Minutes Later…

“Welp,” Rayon said. He walked up to the door of their cage, looking it over. It was seven feet in diameter, with a single latch and two hinges. Rayon tested the metal with his hand.

“This cage is very old,” Rayon observed, “And the hinges are weak.”

            “So?”

Rayon began to back up. He stepped away from the door, moving at a steady pace. His eyes remained locked on the door as he moved away from it. Lyoness watched him curiously.

“A strong enough impact should knock it clean open,” Rayon explained. He reached the opposite wall, and his back pressed against it. There he stood for a moment, staring at the closed door in front of him. “And if it doesn’t, I’m in for a world of pain.”

            “You’re not going to-“

Rayon charged the door. He swung his left arm around in front of him as he picked up speed. Across the cage he sprinted, flying for the door full speed. Lyoness watched dubiously, fully expecting to see him get hurt.

There was a tremendous clang as Rayon’s metal arm met the metal of the door. He threw his full weight into it. His shoulder and thigh followed the metal arm, hitting above and below it. His head, he preserved.

The blow was too much, and the door was ripped from its hinges. The latch flew apart, clattering across the floor. The rest of the door followed shortly, slamming into the ground just outside the cage. The noise echoed tremendously throughout the warehouse. Rayon fell with it, landing atop the piece of metal. Lyoness peered after him.

The dust settled, and Rayon rose from the rubble. He groaned, “Gyeaahh!”

Lyoness stepped cautiously out of the entrance, her baby in her arms. She looked left, and then right, before proceeding. Rayon was still reeling from the collision.

“Come on,” Lyoness prompted, “They’re bound to have heard that racket. We need to escape.”

They unbolted the door, and slipped outside.

Evening was falling upon the compound. The gates were closed securely, and the guests dismissed. Rayon and Lyoness found themselves in some form of industrial park. They were surrounded by warehouses, all of the same style of the one they’d just broken out of. Each was labeled carefully. The one they’d emerged from read ‘Extraordinary Felines’.

“How many people has Mr. Fink trapped here?” Rayon asked.

“You can worry about that later,” Lyoness hissed. She grabbed his arm, yanking him into a shadow. Rayon stumbled along after her.

A heartbeat after they’d hidden, there was a chorus of running feet. Over to the warehouse ran security, in the form of four well-armed men. They wore blue uniforms, and each had a sword. They inspected the open warehouse, and two of their members slipped inside. The others remained.

“Escape!” one of the men shouted, “The lion-humans have escaped!”

            “Release the hounds!”

Rayon and Lyoness fled. They scampered down an alleyway between two warehouses, and once at the end, shot off around the corner. The dusk light covered their escape beautifully, and they moved with catlike grace and precision.

The baying of dogs filled the air. Rayon and Lyoness came to a stop at an intersection between multiple warehouses. Rayon pointed to their left, where the park’s border could be seen in the distance.

“I’ll hold off the dogs and security,” Rayon told her, “You make a break for it.”

Lyoness stared at him, “You would do that? For me? After I tried to kill your wife, and beat you, and…”

Lyoness’ eyes locked with Rayon’s. They stared each other down, sharing the same intensity. Rayon finally shook his head, freeing himself from her gaze.

“This child in your arms,” Rayon said, “He is unspoiled, innocent, a blank slate. I know from experience that the children of Michael Thom always suffer. But this one… he has a chance. Don’t deny him that chance. For the sake of all that’s holy, don’t deny him a chance to be a good person.”

A pack of seven dogs skidded around the corner, a single warehouse down. Upon making visual contact with the escapees, they began to bellow tremendously. The pack swarmed forwards, rushing towards them. Rayon gave Lyoness a good shove towards the border.

“Run!” he ordered. Without a word of protest, Lyoness fled. She sprinted for the border. Rayon spun to face the hounds, snarling.

The first dog reached him, and immediately pounced. Rayon knocked it down with a single hit. The second zigzagged up, followed closely by the third. One of the dogs bit down on Rayon’s leg, beginning to tug at his pants. Another lunged for his arm, which he was striking them with.

The biggest of the dogs clamped its jaws on Rayon’s metal arm. Its jaws locked into place, and the dog held on for dear life. There was a terrible sound as the tuxedo tore. Rayon threw the dog off with tremendous effort.

“Dangit, this was a rental!” Rayon shouted.

Following the dogs closely were members of security. They all unsheathed swords, charging for the chaos. The dogs prevented Rayon from fleeing further. As he smacked another hound, he shot a nervous look at the security.

“Oh I will fight all of you at once,” Rayon said finally, his teeth clicking together, “You want a piece of m-“

There was whoosh to his right, and a pair of hands wrapped around his metal arm. Just like that, Rayon was pulled up off the ground. The dogs fell away from him, and the security as well. Rayon was pulled to safety by some unknown rescuer.

He looked up, and his expression brightened. There, in the sky above him, was Sara. She was using her magicks to fly, and she was holding onto him for dear life. She looked down, and they shared the same relieved smile.

“Sara!” Rayon choked out, “You’re here!”

“I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” Sara exclaimed, “Mr. Fink made up so many excuses to pardon your absence, I knew he was hiding something. After my investigation failed to turn up anything, I waited for the sound of fighting. And there you were! Now come on, we’re leaving.”

“We can’t go yet!” Rayon protested, “I need to make sure Lyoness got past the border. She was a prisoner here too, and I helped her escape!”

“Lyoness??” Sara demanded, and nearly dropped him. Rayon clutched her wrists tightly.

“Rayon,” Sara continued, “The entirety of the compound is surrounded by a hundred-foot-deep moat. I hid in it while Mr. Fink discharged the other guests, and I used it to navigate the rest of the park without being seen. Lyoness couldn’t possibly have gotten past the border!”

They both looked down. Sure enough, there was Lyoness at the edge of the compound. She stood at the before a deep ravine, which gaped open like a pair of giant jaws. Water sloshed fifty feet down, churning angrily. There was no crossing it.

Security surrounded Lyoness on all sides. She was trapped, men and dogs barring any exits. She held her baby tightly to her chest, growling at the attackers. She bared her claws threateningly.

“Drop me down there!” Rayon exclaimed, pointing at the scene below.

“Lyoness is a crook and a villain,” Sara accused, “She tried to kill me, she beat you when you refused to cooperate with her, she kidnapped our son, and she was in cahoots with Michael Thom!”

“Sara,” Rayon shouted, “She has a baby!”

            Below…

Mr. Fink strutted up to the scene, Clout a pace behind him. Mr. Fink stood amidst his security officers, inspecting the trapped lion-woman. She glared daggers at him.

“Nice try, my dear,” Mr. Fink said, “But you can’t escape from one so wry as myself!”

“That word doesn’t work there,” Lyoness growled.

“But wait, where is the male?” Mr. Fink questioned. He looked between his security members. They shared the same nervous glance.

“He got away,” one said finally.

“Seriously?!” Mr. Fink demanded, “You let him get away?! Demerits for all you lazy slugs!”

Lyoness’ baby woke up, and began to cry. The sound of the child’s sobs entirely distracted Mr. Fink. He brightened considerably, “Hello! What’s this?” Horror overtook Lyoness.

There was a moment’s struggle, and Lyoness’ baby was pried from her arms. Three members of security restrained Lyoness. She tried to hit and bite them, but failed by all accounts. The baby was offered to Mr. Fink.

“Hush, little baby,” Mr. Fink said, peeling back a layer of cloth. He inspected the infant with the eye of a dingo. “Why, he’s adorable! How wonderful, another addition to m-“

The panther tail fell from the folds of the cloth. Mr. Fink stared at the tail for a moment, his joy squelched. Disgust overcame him.

“A panther human!?” Mr. Fink demanded, “What a ripoff! You can get those a dime a dozen. They’re clearly inferior to the race of lion-humans I’ve been trying so hard to catch.” Mr. Fink handed the baby to Clout, who grunted. “Discard it.”

“WHAT?” Lyoness roared. She tried to lunge forward, but security held her fast.

“Just dump it in the moat, and we’ll resume business,” Mr. Fink said.

Clout shuffled towards the moat. Lyoness began to scream and thrash, but was powerless to stop him. From Clout’s arms, the baby cried loudly. Clout remained an unmovable stone, apparently unfazed by any of the proceedings. Mr. Fink watched carelessly.

Clout stopped at the edge of the moat, staring down into the water. The baby wiggled in his grasp, still bawling. Clout looked down at him, staring at the infant in his hands. Mr. Fink began to tap his foot impatiently.

“Well?” Mr. Fink asked, “Toss it in!”

Clout was unresponsive. He remained still and silent, gazing at the baby in his arms. Mr. Fink planted his hands on his hips.

            “Clout!” Mr. Fink shouted.

            “Precious.”

Everyone stared. Clout slowly turned from the moat, shifting to face them. For the first time, his mouth opened, and he murmured with a deep voice, “Precious.”

“Clout! You can speak?!” Mr. Fink exclaimed, flabbergasted. “I wasn’t even aware you had a brain to begin with!” he pointed, “Now stop yapping and throw the kid into the water.”

“Life,” Clout rumbled, “Is precious.” He held up Lyoness’ baby, “Baby is precious.”

“Ugh!” Mr. Fink began to stop forward, “Fine, I’ll do it myself. Give me the baby, or-“

Rayon landed in front of Mr. Fink. He hit the ground in a crouch, either knee bent, and his right hand touching the ground before him. Mr. Fink stopped on a dime, recoiling. Rayon stared him down.

“Or what, punk?” Rayon asked, rising to his full height. He towered over Mr. Fink, “Not even I was gonna mess with the big guy. I was going to wait until he let go of the baby, and then swoop in and catch it. But I guess now’s a good a time as any.”

“Lion-man!” Mr. Fink cheered, “I was worried you’d left.”

Sara fluttered to the ground, landing gracefully beside Clout. She held out her arms, and Clout delivered the baby to her. Sara cradled the baby gently, stepping away from what would quickly become chaos. Mr. Fink squinted at Rayon. Lyoness looked more than relieved.

“You can’t threaten me,” Mr. Fink snapped, “I’ve got you outnumbered!”

Rayon smirked, “Sounds like someone’s compensating. Shortie.”

Mr. Fink signaled, and his security leapt on Rayon in a mass. Fists met heads in rapid succession. Sara shot a few blasts at the men that restrained Lyoness, causing them to separate. Lyoness jumped free. Clout, too, joined their cause. He clobbered the security to the ground.

As fighting raged, Mr. Fink broke free from the chaos and began to run. Upon seeing him flee, Lyoness angrily pursued. She bounded after him in a rage, her fists clenched and tail puffed up. Mr. Fink let out a cry as she chased him down.

            “Clout!” Mr. Fink screamed, “CLOOOOOUT!”

Lyoness morphed. She dropped down on all fours, her arms and legs becoming shorter and stronger. Her skin exploded into fur. Her face elongated, becoming a muzzle, and her ears were relocated to the top of her head. Her eyes became golden as a midday sun. In only a few short seconds, Lyoness had gone from being a human to being a lion.

Lyoness pounced on Mr. Fink, slamming him to the ground. She planted either paw on his shoulder, and revealed a row of razor-sharp teeth. Mr. Fink cowered beneath her, terrified. He covered his face with his hands.

“You shouldn’t collect creatures that can kill you,” Lyoness snarled.

            “Lyoness.”

She looked up. A few yards away stood Rayon, his arms folded. He was bruised and his tuxedo ruined, but his mannerisms remained regal. He stared her down, the only man alive who was unafraid to look a hungry lioness in the eye.

“That’s enough,” Rayon said. He held out the baby, “Come here.”

Lyoness morphed into a human in an instant. She ran to Rayon, practically snatching her baby from his arms. She cradled the infant tenderly, rocking him back and forth. Meanwhile, Rayon took the liberty of tackling Mr. Fink.

“No!” Mr. Fink cried as Rayon tied his hands behind his back. “You can’t do this to me! I can’t go back to jail!”

“You think you have problems?” Rayon asked, “My rented tuxedo is ruined, I missed my restaurant reservation, and you messed up my anniversary gift to my wife.” He looked over his shoulder, where Lyoness was cuddling her baby. “Fortunately, you failed in doing anything worse.”

            Later…

Mr. Fink and his associates were hauled away by the authorities. Rayon, Sara, and Lyoness lingered by the portal, preparing to part. Lyoness held her baby in her arms tenderly. He had fallen back asleep.

“I’m almost happy Clout didn’t get arrested,” Rayon commented, looking out across the sea of Orinabalian KOPS and various other warriors. “I don’t think he’s a bad person. He just has a room temperature IQ, and blindly follows whoever’s in charge. Now that he’s beginning to think for himself, he should be all right.”

“Mr. Fink’s operation is being shut down,” Sara added in, “And the creatures returned to their proper homes.”

“But what of me?” Lyoness asked hopelessly, “I can’t go back to the Shipwrecked Islands, not with a male baby. They’ll try to kill him. And that is the last thing I want.”

Rayon considered this. Lyoness continued, “Where can I go?”

Rayon smiled, “I think I know.”

            Orinabal, Next Day…

“Lyoness,” Rayon said, “I’d like you to meet someone.”

Rayon brought Lyoness to a small home in the town of Orinabal. The occupants of the home were overjoyed to see him again. Rayon was greeted by a middle-aged woman. She had short blonde hair, pulled into a ponytail behind her head. She wore a purple, sleeveless dress. A lion tail flicked around behind her.

A young man joined the woman at the door. He was in his early twenties. He had raven hair, and wore a dark green tunic with a pair of black pants. His eyes were dark as the midnight forest, and he had a panther tail.

“This,” Rayon explained, “is my mother, Ivy Josephs, and my brother, Panthan. Mom, this is Lyoness. She needs your help.”

Ivy smiled kindly, “Hello, my dear.”

            Heroicits…

“For you, Sara,” Rayon said, bending a knee before his wife. He produced a bouquet of flowers, offering them to her. She brightened.

“Why, Rayon!” Sara exclaimed, “That’s so sweet!” she accepted the bouquet, holding them to her nose as she took a deep whiff. “They smell wonderful.”

“It’s been five years now,” Rayon said, getting to his feet, “I wish I could’ve done something special to commemorate it, but… my plans went up in flames.”

“My love,” Sara said, pressing her palm gently to Rayon’s cheek, “You nearly sacrificed yourself so that a mother and child could escape. That is a very noble thing.”

“If you hadn’t swooped in, I would’ve been ripped apart,” Rayon said, “I couldn’t have done it without you.”

            “Happy anniversary.”

            They kissed.

The end.

I was thinking, 'You know, Rayon's never fought a pack of dogs before.'

Now he has! :D
